Hair extension aftercare: the complete client guide
Extensions last longest with four habits: brushing from the ends upwards twice a day, never sleeping with wet hair, keeping conditioner away from the bonds, and returning for correction every two to three months.
Washing
Wash standing under the shower with the head upright, not tipped forward over a bath. Shampoo the scalp, let the lather run down the lengths. Conditioner and masks go from mid-length to ends only — never onto the attachment area, where they soften the bond.
Brushing
Twice daily with a soft-bristle or loop brush, starting at the ends and working upwards while holding the hair above the bonds. Brushing straight down from the roots is the single most common cause of loosened attachments.
Sleeping
Always dry before bed. Wet hair tangles at the root and matting forms overnight. A loose plait or low ponytail protects the lengths; a tight band at the nape creates tension on the bonds.
Heat and styling
Styling tools are fine on the lengths but must not touch the attachment area, particularly with keratin bonds. Heat protection on the lengths extends the life of the hair itself.
Swimming and sport
Chlorine and salt water dry the hair. Wet it with clean water first, tie it up, and rinse thoroughly afterwards. Sweat at the scalp is not a problem, but drying properly after training is.
Correction timing
Two to three months, no later. Delay is not saving money — it creates matting at the root that lengthens the removal and risks breakage.
The first 48 hours
No washing for the first day, no tight styles, and no sleeping with the hair loose and damp. The bond needs to settle, and most early problems are created in the first two nights rather than over months of wear.
Products to avoid
- Oils and silicone-heavy masks near the attachment area
- Sulphate-heavy clarifying shampoos used weekly
- Dry shampoo sprayed directly onto the bonds
- Alcohol-based styling products at the roots
All four soften or dry the bond, and all four are things clients do without realising it matters.
A written aftercare card is not optional
Clients forget spoken instructions within a day. A short written card — wash upright, brush from the ends, dry before sleeping, return in two to three months — prevents most complaints and takes two minutes to hand over. Masters who skip this step spend far more time later explaining why the hair matted.

Frequently asked questions
Can you wash hair with extensions every day?
Yes, but two to three times a week is gentler. Always wash upright and keep conditioner away from the bonds.
Can you dye hair with extensions?
The client's own roots can be coloured with care, avoiding the attachment area, but the extension hair itself should not be lightened.
