Nano ring and micro ring extensions: the cold, glue-free method
Ring extensions attach each strand with a small metal bead clamped around the client's own hair — no heat and no adhesive. They suit clients who react badly to keratin, allow the hair to be reused many times, but require precise tension control to avoid traction damage.
How the attachment works
A section of the client's hair is threaded through a lined bead together with the extension strand, then the bead is clamped flat with pliers. Nothing is heated and nothing is glued, which is why this family of methods belongs to cold extension technology.
Nano vs micro
- Micro ring — larger bead, faster application, suitable for normal to thick hair
- Nano ring — roughly half the diameter, far less visible, the choice for fine hair
Nano rings need more strands to distribute the same volume, which means more time — and that time must be priced in.
Who it suits
Clients with keratin sensitivity, clients who have had bad experiences with heat, and clients who want to reuse hair across several corrections. Because nothing is bonded chemically, removal is quick and the hair comes out intact.
The main technical risk
Over-tightening. A bead clamped too hard, or placed too close to the scalp, pulls with every movement and causes traction damage at exactly the points the client cannot see. The bead must sit firmly but rotate slightly if pushed — that is the tension test.
Slippage and how to avoid it
Beads slip when the section is too small for the bead size, when the client uses oils near the roots, or when the bead is reused after being clamped once. Silicone-lined beads grip better; single-use is the professional standard.
Maintenance rhythm
Correction every two to three months: beads are opened, the hair is detangled and washed, and strands are reattached at the new root position with fresh beads. The extension hair itself commonly survives three to five corrections.
How it compares with concealed-bond methods
Rings are glue-free and quick to remove, but the bead is a solid object that can be felt and, on very fine hair, seen. Concealed-bond cold methods form a flatter attachment that disappears in the hair, which is why they price higher in premium markets.
